The lovely Victorian houses perched in a neat row on hilly terrains make San Francisco an ideal place for vacation and residence. Often referred to as the bay area, San Francisco’s culture is very diverse but liberal. As one of the largest cities in the state California, San Francisco provides hundreds of activities one can do in a day.
The Golden Gate Bridge is the most iconic landmark in San Francisco. It can be a worthwhile experience to walk down the bridge. Apparently, it is also witness to several suicides with a rate of one person a week jumping off the bridge.
Near the Golden Gate is the old Spanish and Mexican barrack, The Presidio. Visitors can grab dinner and cocktails in its Presidio Social Club. It has several collections such as various Spanish artillery, batteries and historical architectures.
The Golden Gate Park is a magical place especially when the flowers are in full bloom. The 1000-acre park has several attractions such as the Dutch Windmill and the lovely Wilhelmina Tulip Garden surrounding it.
Another equally lovely spot is the Shakespeare garden. It is a reminiscent of the garden in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. From a classic English garden, Golden Gate Park also incorporates a flare of the East. Visitors can take a relaxing stroll around the serene Japanese Tea Garden designed by Makoto Hagiwara. It has pagodas, walkways, bridges, bonsai plants and a Japanese open-air café.
The Conservatory of Flowers, on the other hand, is a greenhouse and the oldest structure inside the park. One can find a wide selection of botanical species inside the greenhouse as well as a host of different butterfly species.
The Carousel is also an attraction especially for children. The Herschell – Spillman Carousel can be found in the southeast section where children can take a ride for a dollar.
Other attractions include the MH de Young Memorial Museum, Music Concourse, California Academy of Sciences, Beach Chalet, Bison Paddock, and The National AIDS Memorial Grove.
The Exploratorium is a science exhibit and laboratory with tools and programs specific for the twenty-first century. The exhibits and interactive tools involve the human body, earth science, space and astronomy, living things and everyday science.
The Coit Tower, located on top of the Telegraph Hill, gives a good view of the city of San Francisco, the bay, and the Golden Gate. The tall, white column served as a symbol of San Francisco’s skyline. Although the tower was built in honor of the San Francisco firefighters, it was not patterned to resemble a fire hose nozzle. It was named in memory of wealthy firefighter patron, Lillie Hitchcock Coit.
Telegraph Hill is mainly a residential area. However, there are plenty of attractions found in the area. Aside from the Coit Tower, visitors can find the Filbert Steps, lovely gardens along Filbert Street and to Levi Plaza as well as various feral parrots in the area.
