Local Festivals

As a predominantly Catholic country, Spain celebrates several patron saint’s day. However, they also have their own share of cultural festivals and festivities. Among the most popular events include the following.

Every February, Barcelona celebrates their annual Carnival. During this celebration, difference barrios participate in the parade and in the street dancing. The event is very similar to Rio’s carnival and is slowly gaining in popularity. In May, the Formula One Spanish Grand Prix is held a few kilometers outside Barcelona. This three day event is held in Circuit de Catalunya (Montmelo).

June and July are usually for festivals and events dedicated to music, arts, dance and performing arts. The Sonar Festival is the electronic music festival in Barcelona held every June. From the middle of June to early August, Barcelona celebrates the Grec Festival. During this time, various dance, song and theater performances are held in Greek-inspired venues.

The most popular event in Barcelona happens in mid-August. The Fiesta Major de Gracia holds contests where every street in the district of Gracia participates. The target would be to win as the best decorated street. That is why many decorative lanterns, ribbons, paper maches and woodworks can be seen during this event. There is music, food and endless drinking during this major fiesta in Barcelona.

Another major event is the Fiesta de la Merce held every 24th of September. This event honors Our Lady the Virgin of Mercy for delivering the people from locust infestation during the 17th century. During this event, fireworks and noise are common to give honor and ward off evil.
