About Cape Town

South Africa may give you the impression of safari and the wild. However, South Africa’s capital, Cape Town, is one of the most highly urbanized cities in the world. Beautiful beaches and the Table Top Mountain in the west coast surround Cape Town. Meanwhile, the eastern part offers endless stretches of winelands and scenery. Cape Town has strong Dutch and French influence, being the first settlers in the area. The city’s culture, cuisine and architecture, therefore, have strong European influence.

Top Tourist Attractions

When in Cape Town, never miss a hike to the top of Table Mountain. Watch the breathtaking view of the sunset or sunrise. The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, popularly known as the V&A Waterfront is a popular tourist destination especially for those who love dining, shopping, and other entertainment activities. For more crafts, arts and novelty items, you can find stalls and small shops along Long Street and Greenmarket Square.

If you are visiting Cape Town with your family or you simply aquatic life forms, drop by the Two Oceans Aquarium. If you get lucky, you can personally feed the penguins and the sharks. Guests can also go shark diving for a unique experience. For those who love the outdoors, Kirstenbosch Cape Town is a good venue for long walks along rows of beautiful flowers, plants and sculptures.

Day Excursions

If you plan to have day excursions, a good suggestion would be a scenic drive to Cape Point South Africa to see the baboons. A side trip to Boulders Beach to see the penguins is also a good idea as both attractions are in close proximity to each other.

Another alternative for a day excursion is Robben Island. The island houses a prison where Mandela was taken as prisoner. A guided tour, conducted by former inmates will not only take you to Mandela’s cell but also to the prison museum and the Cell Stories exhibition area. Here’s a tip, if you are on a bus tour, try to sit at the right side to get better view of the limestone quarry, the leper’s graveyard, lighthouse and the Moturu Kramat.

Hiking, picnicking or sunset watching in Signal Hill and Lions Head Mountain is also a must-try. Apart from sunset watching, another highlight when visiting Signal Hill is the Noon Gun. Every 12 noon, a large cannon is fired every day except during public holidays and Sundays. As a side trip, visit Bo-Kaap, small Malay section with colorful buildings and residences. Bo-Kaap has some of the best exotic restaurants, teashops and vendors selling samoosas, a type of pastry filled with vegetable or beef curry.

Lastly, never miss a drive to Constantia Valley for a scenic view of the historic vineyard and of course, wine tasting. Safari tours are also available which are usually two-hour drives from the town proper.

Events and Festivals

There are many festivals in Cape Town. One of the popular festivals is the Gourmet Festival held every May. During the festival, the winner of the Swiss Wine awards is announced. There are also numerous food and wine exhibitions where visitors can enjoy good food, wine and cooking courses.
